The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS)

The Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) is Arizona’s version of Medicaid. (A.R.S. §§ 36-2901 et seq.)  AHCCCS provides health insurance to low income Arizonans through a health plan. Doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, etc. are included in the health plan to provide all AHCCCS covered services.


In addition to health plans, AHCCCS has several programs for seniors including:

• Medicare Cost Sharing provides help with Medicare expenses

• SSI Cash/Medical Assistance Only program provides medical coverage for seniors who do not receive monthly cash benefits under the Supplemental Security Income Program (SSI),

Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS) which provides ongoing services at nursing facility level of care either at an individual’s home, assisted living facility or in a nursing home.
